Long Branch Park, located near Killeen Texas is full of history. Situated on the banks of the San Gabriel River, the park was originally named City Park around the turn of the century, but by 1928 it was renamed for Long Branch, NJ, where William B. Travis, a confederate veteran, had fought in the Civil War. The park remained known as Long Branch Park until 1942, when it was renamed. Today, Long Branch Park has seven miles of trails, four playgrounds, a spray ground, picnic shelters and grills, a fishing lake, and a miniature train for kids to ride. The park also has two artificial ice rinks, and hosts several special events during the year.
Killeen’s Long Branch Park is known as being the city’s premier outdoor sports facility. From archery and disc golf to soccer and softball, there’s a place for everyone. But there’s so much more to the park than just sports. The 6.5-acre park features a playground, four pavilions, walking and biking trails, fishing, and water features. It’s the perfect place to spend a sunny summer day.
The 400-acre Long Branch Park encompasses two lakes, a 75-acre lake and a 11-acre lake. The larger lake is stocked with catfish, bass, minnows, and crappie. The 11-acre lake is stocked with trout, which grow to large sizes. Both lakes are stocked with channel and blue catfish. Fishing is a year-round activity at the park. The 11-acre lake has a boat launch ramp, and a covered boat dock and swimming beach area. There is a canoe/kayak/paddleboard rental concession at the main playground. A 1.5-mile paved nature trail connects the park to the Long Branch Golf Course. There is a concession building at the park, which includes a convenience store, restrooms, and a picnic shelter with tables, grills, and electricity.
