Air Field Lake
Air Field Lake is a man-made reservoir at Fort Hood, Texas. It is part of the Fort Hood Military Reservation, which is also home to several other Army and National Parks features including the Bailey Lake Preserve, Bailey Lake Campground and Recreational Area, and the Arras Valley Training Complex. The Air Field Lake reservoir is located south of the post’s main gate along Texas Highway 190. And while it may not seem like much, Air Field Lake serves as an essential source of water for Fort Hood military operations and residences throughout the base.
The airfield itself was established in 1918 as a training facility for aviation personnel. Today, the airfield remains a hub for flight training activities and aircraft maintenance services at the city of Fort Hood. The lake also functions as an irrigation system to control runoff from surrounding area lands and prevent soil erosion within the post limits. Because it plays such an important role in base operations, Air Field Lake sees regular use by military members, civilian employees and their families for recreation activities like boating, fishing or camping.
Air Field Lake is a man-made lake on Fort Hood’s Camp Bulloch property that has become a hotspot for birdwatchers and photographers from around the world. It is a popular birding spot with more than 250 species of birds having been spotted there over the past few years, including Black-crowned Night Herons, Great Egrets, Snowy Egrets and several other waterfowl species such as Mallards and Wood Ducks. There are also hundreds of ducks that inhabit the area during migration season, some of them passing through the entire year long. The lake itself is not much to look at but lies hidden among tall containment pens that are home to numerous exotic animals such as camels, llamas and alpacas.
