Yettie Polk Park
Yettie Polk Park is a 342-acre tract of land in the city of Belton, just north of its municipal airport. The park is named for the first woman mayor of Belton, Yettie Polk. It was established in 1954 and is home to more than 60 acres of natural prairie, woodland, marsh and pasture. This unique combination of habitat has made Yettie Polk one of Central Texas’ most popular parks. It is also a haven for birders and nature lovers during the spring and summer months.
The park has a wide array of recreational opportunities including hiking trails, fishing access points, equestrian trails, picnic areas and playgrounds. There are also several places to get out on the water within convenient driving distance from the park. These include boat ramps at Lake Arrowhead (6 miles south) and Spring Creek (3 miles east). Fishing enthusiasts will enjoy access to five different lakes with fishing opportunities in each one. In addition, there are numerous public boat docks along the nearby San Marcos River that provide easy access to both freshwater and brackish water fish species such as catfish, bass or crappie. A snack bar and restrooms are available at Yettie Polk Park but pets are not allowed inside the facility.
Yettie Polk Park is Belton’s newest addition to the city’s recreational offerings. The park is located on land formerly occupied by the Polk Lumber Yard. The town purchased the property from Polk in 2016. Once complete, the park will total over 6 acres and include two separate recreation areas: an athletic field with a football/soccer field, baseball field, and a dog park; and an open green space that will be used for community events, picnics, family outings and more.
