Harker Heights is located in Fort Bend County, about 30 minutes northwest of downtown Houston and west of Belton. The city has a population of about 15,000 people and there are five subdivisions in Harker Heights. Harker Heights is a small town in Bell County, Texas. At the time of the 2010 United States Census, the town had a population of 1,309. The town’s primary economic driver is agriculture and livestock. The area around Harker Heights is known as “The Great Plains” for its flat landscape and plentiful grasses and wetlands. It is located about 15 miles east of Granbury and about 25 miles west of Canyon Lake. Harker Heights was established in 1866 by pioneer John Scott Harker (1822-1904). According to local legend, he owned a large herd of cattle which he used to trade with settlers in exchange for land to start his farm.
